Banteay Chhmar temple
Banteay Chhmar is the largest Buddhist temple in Banteay Meanchey Province. It was constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the late twelfth century. The temple is generally believed to have been dedicated to the memory of the king's son, Prince Śrīndrakumāra, who was killed in battle while resisting a Cham invasion. Through its extensive bas-reliefs, Banteay Chhmar preserves vivid memories of this historical period. The sculptural program depicts royal and religious processions, military campaigns, and scenes of everyday life, all intricately carved along the surrounding gallery walls.
